PART III
DOING THE RIGHT THING
âUnhand me this minute,â Elizabeth said, as she pushed Darcy away. âIs this why you took me into the boxwoods, to compromise me?â
âI did nothing of the kind, Miss Bennet, and speak softly. We kissed each other but you instigated it and I joined in. You were scared because of the sky and the wind and I put my arms around you to protect you. What was that all about anyway, and how long have we been here?â
Elizabeth did not look kindly at what he had done but now she thought that she may have kissed him first. She appreciated his protecting her when they crouched between the boxwoods. âThat was all so crazy, Mr. Darcy. I have never seen anything to match that. The wind and the crazy sky seemed to fall on us and those streaks of red in the black were very menacing.â She believed there must be an explanation for why they were kissing but she could not remember. Still, she did not recall them kissing when they hid in the boxwoods. To Elizabeth, the kiss had changed her and she wondered if anything else happened in the boxwoods. Both of them were confused.
Darcy waited for her to answer his question and finally she did.
âI do not know how long we were hidden there, Mr. Darcy. Perhaps it was just for a minute or two, but I do not remember when the storm stopped and the sky cleared. It was as if that happened just for us. Does that make any sense?â
âNo, Miss Bennet. Indeed, it is all a blur, but I see no damage nearby and it has not rained. It is all very strange.â
She brushed herself off as Darcy did the same and began their walk toward Darcy House.
âBefore all of that, I was telling you that we have the proof that Wickham wrote the letter to Mr. Bingley.â
âYes, and I was so happy that I giggled and you rushed me into the boxwoods so others would not see me make a spectacle of myself. How convenient for you if your plan was to compromise me.â
âMiss Bennet, did I also plan for the sky to darken and the wind and that twirling maze of colors that we saw? If I had such powers, we would have long ago been married.â
âAnd if I had such powers, I would use them for doing good in the world.â
âAye, he said, but I would be very happy having you around. It must be your lively spirit, Elizabeth.â What have I done? She is not my Elizabeth. What will you say now, Elizabeth?
Elizabeth now raised one eyebrow and with a look of mischief, she challenged her friend. âAs much as I enjoy hearing my name roll off of your lips, Mr. Darcy, I have not granted you permission to address me by my Christian name.â
She immediately regretted her words for she had let Darcy kiss her and even now she could still feel his strong arms wrapped around her and making her warm while protecting her.
